DIY: Vase – Lamp – Vase

I am forever trying to find ways to make the relics of my husband’s bachelorhood disappear or at least re-work them into something interesting or useful.

Exhibit A: He had 3 of these Chinese style vase-lamps from John Lewis (a matching pair in his bedroom and a larger one which we gave to his mother).

Needless to say, they don’t really fit into my design aesthetic and I was planning to post them on eBay until I found these photos (sources unknown, if anyone knows where they are from, please let me know so I can give credit).

Feeling inspired, I decided to transform my lamps back into vases. Tools at the ready.

First, I ripped the fabric base cover to reveal the wiring.

I loosened the nut, clipped the wire and pulled it through the vase.  I removed the wood base and light fixture and ended up with this!

You can see that when this was originally converted from a vase to a lamp (if that’s what happened rather than being designed as a lamp meant to look like it had been converted from a vase to a lamp), the little knob on top was discarded.  I used a ceramic Zara Home knob I had lying around and secured it with a nut underneath.   It’s a bit awkward but will suffice until I find a better replacement.

Think Pink!

Maggie Prescott, the frightening editrix in 1957′s Funny Face, was speaking sense when she told us to Think Pink!  Though when I first saw the film, this musical number made me want to retch.

However, a quick google search tells me that there is no diagnosed condition of the fear of the colour pink (cf the colours red and purple).  So it’s time to forget the Paris Hilton effect on the colour, pull down our jackets, walk tall and reclaim pink!

Enjoy.

Black furniture. Not for you?

Think again.

Recently Meg and I were chatting about colors (/colours…I often have spelling identity crises having lived abroad for a few years now) to use on a little bamboo desk.  I was thinking blue but she wisely pushed me to something a bit more bold.  We settled on black.  We’ve posted this guy before, but I wanted to show some further examples of using black – a color/colour (identity crises) – that I think people are scared of.

Here’s the final desk as a refresher (for sale on Etsy, if you like):

And here are a few rooms that incorporate black for you to drool over:

Black book shelves…ooohhhh…dramatic.

High gloss black floors!!!

Matte black floors!!!  (Floors technically aren’t furniture, but you get the picture).  Also I think this room is really pretty.

Sexy bed.

So the lesson is, don’t be scurred.  If YOU like it, do it.

To animal print, or not to animal print?

This little animal print chair mixed with more structured minimal artwork works wonders.  I want it.

Here’s another one…I’m not so much digging the rug, but the little splash of animal print on the chair in an otherwise quite muted space allows you to appreciate it all the more.

Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie.  French for Chinese-y/Chinese-esque.  We love the Chinese and we love the French so naturellement, nous aimons Chinoiserie (we love Chinoiserie)!!!

What is it you ask?  Chinoiserie is a recurring decorative theme in homewares, furniture and design reflecting the far East influence on art and design throughout the centuries.  Think ornate vases depicting scenes of day-to-day life in the Orient.  Think dragons, pagodas, bamboo, foo dogs, trellis and twisted ancient trees.

The style has been popularised Stateside in recent years.  You will see influences in everything from decorative accessories (foo dogs!) to dinnerware to elaborately decorated lounges.

Not inspired yet?

Have a gander at these beauties:

Now, here come the garden stools. A slight obsession here as you can see.

Bamboozle

In the American interiors world, you aren’t anyone unless you have some bamboo furniture!

Whilst it is easy to copy this style in the US (everyone from upscale retailers to flea markets seem to have some offering of bamboo) it is less easy to find the stuff in the UK!

Jonathan Adler’s Chippendale chairs are probably the most popular (if not the most expensive, retailing at $495.00 for the standard chair and $595.00 to $695.00 for the arm chair – yes, EACH chair).

We have taken it as a personal mission to find and re-furb beautiful, under appreciated bamboo pieces.  Here are two of our finds!! Click to buy!

We have even more pieces that are in the workshop for re-furbs so watch this space!

Animal Alert.

We’ve been having something of an animal moment lately.  Not only are these little guys colourful and vibrant, but they add a touch of whimsy which is always welcome.  These photos don’t even include the gorgeous French bird tins, brass scorpion spoon and silver-plated peacocks we’ve just bought.  Will add them as soon as they’ve arrived in the shop.

Most of these are available for your purchasing pleasure on The Colonies’ Etsy shop.

Happy animal hunting!

Meg and Jess
