McCoy Pottery

McCoy (and USA) pottery are something that always catch my eye.  They are often in bright, vibrant glazes but just as common in more muted pastels which should allow you to choose a palette upon which to build your collection quite easily.  They also come in really fun, varied forms – from a simple textured planter to a more playful animal shape.  You often find that people have a collection of McCoy pieces in a specific palette, but the one-off piece is just as cheerful.

Here’s one special McCoy piece that we have in the shop:

Here are a few more photos for inspiration – I adore this first green collection!

red and green…. not just for Christmas

The ogle fest at Soho House left Jessica and I feeling oh-so-inspired.  Exhibit A: Colonista Jess toning with the Soho House colour scheme…

Even her hair and eyes match!  That is one clever designer!

I mentioned in that blog post that the pervading colour scheme was a turquoisey-sea green and coral-mauvy-red.  Who would have thought that the usually garish red and green colour combination could be transformed into something sooooo lovely?  Just change the tone of the colours and viola!  Or don’t – the primary versions of these colours can be quite chic together with the right touch.

Now – how you can be a little like Jess:

Buy a print, the subject of which looks alarmingly like Jess….

…buy one of these plates in Positano, Italy….

…. paint your walls coral red and buy some turqouise foo dogs ….

….use one colour to lead to another….

…or use accents of red and green in primary with neutrals….

Now, have we all learned something today?

Soho House Berlin

Soho House, so what?

Here’s what:

Jess and I pity the fool who agrees to go on a city break with us because we spend at least 99% of our time looking at and touching beautiful things.   As you can see, we recently visited Berlin and stayed in Soho House.  Designed by Susie Atkinson, the modernist yet plush scheme is a triumph of contrasts.  There is a gorgeous sea green and red-mauve colour sceme pervading throughout.   A mixture of velvets, hardwood, glossy tiles and sparkling chandeliers as well as the minimalist, polished-concrete reception room (complete with a Damien Hirst graffiti shark) had our eyes and hands bouncing and caressing.

A bit like Hotel California, anyone can check-in (not just members), but you will struggle to leave.

hotel style

i recently stayed at the St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel which has just completed a multi-million pound renovation to restore it to its original glory…and let me tell you it was glorious.

my favourite bit of knowledge about the old hotel was that the room they now call “The Ladies Smoking Room” was once the first room in all of Europe that allowed women to smoke in public – gasp!  now of course no one can smoke indoors in England – so there.  here are a few photos i snapped:

this staircase was the one they used in the Spice Girls video.  i was worryingly excited to know that:

original floor tiles.  can’t beat something original to a building…

i even loved their stationary.  this is what the bill was printed on (luckily i wasn’t paying):
